Asif Kapadia’s future shocks drama 2073 will arrive before the year’s end, and a new trailer has arrived.

Asif Kapadia might be best known for his unforgettable documentaries but for his next project, the filmmaker is moving into less charted territory. He has directed 2073, a fictionalised dystopian thriller that made its world premiere today out of competition at the Venice Film Festival back in September.

We caught the film a month or two back, in fact, and reviewed it here.

The film stars Samantha Morton and Naomi Ackie and is said to be inspired by Chris Marker’s 1962 featurette La Jetée, a film about a time traveller who risks his life to change the course of history and save the future of humanity. A first trailer arrived a couple of months ago but it has been revealed today that the film will be releasing in the UK and US on 27th December of this year. Good to see that the US and UK dates appear to be in tandem.

To mark the film’s imminent release date, here’s the new trailer for the film and should you want to check out that non-spoilery review you can do so here.

Following 2073, the early indications are that Kapadia might stay within the field of narrative drama. The filmmaker has been linked to the early development of The Captain And The Enemy, a drama based on the Graham Greene novel in which ‘a young boy is taken from his boarding school by a secretive stranger known simply as ‘the Captain.’

It’s very early days on that one but when we do hear more about Kapadia’s next project, we’ll let you know here.

Here’s the synopsis for the movie, too. We’ll leave you with this…

It’s the year 2073, and the worst fears of modern life have been realised. Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies, and militarised police roam the wrecked streets, while survivors hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence.
