Plans about a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre revival are becoming more clear as A24 plans a series as well as a movie.
It’s been a good while since we’ve heard anything about a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. In March 2025, we reported that Strange Darling director JT Mollner was circling a project as was actor Glen Powell.
A24 won the rights to the Leatherface-fronted franchise back in September 2025, and the studio is now planning not one but two separate projects, as Deadline reports.
First is a TV series, which Mollner is still attached to. Powell is also lending a hand, but only as a producer. Also helming the project are – deep breath! – Spooky Picture’s Roy Lee and Steven Schneider, Stuart Manashil, Image Nation’s Ben Ross, Dan Cohen from Barnstorm and Exurbia Films’ Kim Henkel. Those are all listed as executive producers.
Secondly, a movie is also in the works with the same producers involved, minus Mollner, who will be focusing on the series only.
Here come the mandatory quotes for the projects – and they seem to hint at what kind of horror experience we can expect.
“I’ve said publicly that I’m not interested in remaking perfect films,” Mollner said, “and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a perfect film. Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel created something bold, transgressive and truly seminal that holds up even today as the gold standard for horror. When the opportunity for a longform exploration into this world arose, I saw it as a fresh way in, as well as a way to honor the existing folklore. I can’t imagine better partners for this approach than A24. This is truly an honor.”
Powell had some words, too. “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of my favorite films,” he said. “It defined a generation of horror films and over half a century after its release, it remains one of the definitive movies of my home state. I’m honored to have Barnstorm help bring in a new chapter for such an iconic title and franchise. With a marquee home in A24 and visionary filmmaker with JT Mollner, alongside our top shelf producing partners, I couldn’t have dreamed of a better team for such a dream property.”
Finally, Henkel added: “It was a difficult decision, but A24’s embrace of boundary-testing genre film, and its record of working with artists who are inclined to test boundaries made them a compelling choice. Plus, we believe having a great creative and producing team — JT Mollner, Roy Lee, Dan Cohen and Glen Powell — in place gives us the best shot at a series that could be genuinely eye-opening and unexpected. There’s an epic tale lurking in the Chainsaw backstory.”
Backstory, eh? Does this mean we’ll be looking into Leatherface’s past rather than a completely new story?
Nothing is confirmed at this point, but there’s a lot to celebrate here if you’re a fan of the 1974 original or its sequels of, shall we say, varying quality.
