There seems to be a bit of confusion whether or not the team behind Netflix’s smash hit Adolescence are planning season 2. More on that below.

Adolescence has proven to be a huge hit for Netflix, smashing records left, right and centre for the streaming service. It’s also one of the best TV shows we’ve seen this year and are likely to see for the rest of 2025.

Naturally, everyone is keen to hear whether or not there will be an Adolescence season 2. The series was imagined as a one-off limited series, but the success of it must have Netflix wondering if there’s another story to produce.

Earlier this week, Jack Thorne, who wrote the series with star Stephen Graham, ruled the possibility out, especially a story focusing on Katie, the victim of a horrendous crime. Thorne explained that they were finished telling Jamie’s story and there was nothing more to explore.

“I don’t think there’s anywhere more we can take Jamie, so I don’t think there is a series two,” Thorne told ITV’s This Morning (here via The Independent). Thorne also said they weren’t ā€œthe right people to tell Katie’s storyā€.

“We’d love to explore the one shot format in another way. We’d love to tell other stories with it, but I don’t think a series two of Adolescence is quite right for us.”

Fair enough, but Graham and his wife and producing partner Hannah Walters told Variety quite the opposite. While they emphasised that nothing has been officially decided, the pair seemed open to the idea of Adolescence season 2.

Variety asked the question straight up and Graham answered “Possibly, let’s see how the figures are,” with a smirk, according to the outlet.

“But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story,” the actor said.

Echoing Thorne’s thoughts, Walters also ruled out the possibility of a prequel.

“A prequel to Adolescence, that’s certainly not going to happen,” she mused. “But there’s so much mileage in the one-shot and so much mileage in investing into human nature again and looking at something else. But yeah, everything’s looking good … everyone’s happy, shall we say?”

If Netflix were to produce another season of their surprise hit, it sounds like it could be approached as an anthology rather than a straight up sequel. Adolescence shone a light on some difficult, but urgent matters relating to misogyny, knife crime and the radicalisation of young men on the internet and perhaps there are more stories to tell within that theme. Whether it would work or not, or have the same impact, we have no idea.

If Adolescence season 2 does get announced, we’ll be sure to let you know.
