Apple TV+ implements a £1 increase on its monthly subscription plan in the UK, a rise of 11%. More on the move here.
Apple has nudged up the price of its Apple TV+ streaming service across the world over the last few weeks, with existing customers now getting their emails confirming the chance.
It had been announced a month ago that the monthly subscription cost for the service in the UK was going from £8.99 to £9.99 a month. A modest £1 increase on paper, but also a well above inflation 11% jump. In Apple’s defence, the annual subscription price for its service has remained unchanged at £89.99 a year if you pay in one lump.
But still, while one of the lower-priced services of its ilk, it’s not been lost on people that Apple TV+ has doubled in price in the UK since it launched back in 2019. Its pricing is nonetheless below, for instance, the Netflix top tier price of £18.99 a month. Yet streaming is a high stakes game, and the big companies invested in it are looking to see how many price rises we’ll all take. Notably, Warner Bros Discovery overlord David Zaslav was talking earlier this month about the HBO Max streaming service – which launches in the UK next year – and arguing “we think we’re way underpriced”, and that its output “gives us a chance to raise price.”
Apple’s email, then, gets to the nub of matters fast, delivering the news in under 70 words:
Thank you for subscribing to Apple TV+. We wanted to let you know about an upcoming change to this subscription. Apple is raising the price of this subscription from £8.99 per month to £9.99 per month. Your subscription will automatically renew for £9.99 per month starting on 17 October unless you cancel at least one day before. To learn more or cancel, review your subscription.
Sincerely,
Apple
Expect more price rises from across the assorted streaming services over the coming months. But for the minute, no more have yet been announced.
