The latest video game franchise being eyed up for a big screen adaptation is Call Of Duty. Actually, a film based on the franchise has been planned for some time now, but it’s never quite got out of the vague planning phase. At one point, Dwayne Johnson was supposedly working on a Call Of Duty movie, but nothing ever came of it.
Variety now brings us news that Paramount has signed a deal with Activision to make a movie based on the popular game series. The Call Of Duty franchise, which began in 2003 with the release of the first game, includes over 30 games. The franchise’s earliest games were set in World War II with only 2004’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare introducing a modern setting, as hinted by the game’s title. So Paramount, which will develop, produce and distribute the film, has quite a bit of material to work with.
The games in the franchise have overlapping storylines and characters, but most games are played in first-person and are set in the middle of a military operation. The gamers’ objective is to overtake the other team while killing a buttload of their players.
As Variety notes, Paramount has initially signed on to make one, live-action film but apparently there’s room to expand the universe across film and TV.
Paramount only recently managed to close the deal for the merger with SkyDance and they’ve even managed to bring the Duffer Brothers, best known as the creators of Netflix’s giant hit Stranger Things, on board exclusively. They’re also going to be the new home of the Ultimate Fighting Championship for the next seven years. So far, it’s been a pretty decent year for Paramount.
The Call Of Duty film is most likely still a while away, but it’s hard to imagine Paramount would want to take it slow with such a huge title. We’ll keep you posted on any news on the movie.
