Capcom says Deep Down has “not been completely given up on”

Cast your mind back to 2013, when the PS4 first became fully realised, and you may remember that Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono, aka Mr Street Fighter, gave the world a peek at a brand-new dungeon crawler called Deep Down.

We saw a feisty medieval warrior battle a fire-breathing dragon – it was all very exciting – and though the game didn’t make an appearance at E3 that year, we were assured that Deep Down was very much in the works as a free to play title, with a 2014 release date being eyed.

Well, we’re five years on from there and not much has happened, despite Capcom extending its trademark on the game last year. So, what happened to one of the PS4’s former most highly anticipated exclusive titles?

Ono has addressed the lack of news on the Deep Down front in a new interview with Eurogamer.

“The original team is clearly no longer together at this point, but people might have noticed that we’ve kept the trademark registered, and it’s not been completely given up on,” he explained. “Every year we examine titles we’re doing in future, and we bring up projects to approve and move forward. There’s not much I can say about it, but if you’ve noticed we’ve kept the trademark it means we haven’t given up on the title completely.”

That modicum of reassurance is all well and good, but we could stand to see a little more movement on Deep Down to assuage these deflated vibes. This feels a bit like it’s in a box stored away at Capcom’s Raiders Of The Lost Ark-style warehouse, which is a shame, as the game once seemed like it could have been quite special.
