Gurinder Chadha brings us a new take on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and there’s a new trailer for it. Take a look below. 

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a story filmmakers have been fascinated by for decades, but it’s hard to do anything new or exciting with the source material. 

Enter Gurinder Chadha! The Bend It Like Beckham director – and Film Stories cover star! – has taken the classic story and turned it into a musical and applied its themes of loneliness to the immigrant experience in the UK. 

The first trailer has just been released for Christmas Karma and you can watch it below:

Well, that looks a bit good, doesn’t it? Kunal Nayyar plays Mr. Sood, the film’s modern version of Scrooge. In line with Dickens’ original story, Mr. Sood is visited by the three Ghosts of Christmas (Eva Longoria, Billy Porter and Boy George) in order for him to find the true meaning of Christmas. They’re also joined by Leo Suter, Pixie Lott, Charithra Chandran, Danny Dyer and Hugh Bonneville in the cast. 

It looks like there’s a little more to Chadha’s take on A Christmas Carol. The scenes of British people protesting the arrival of immigrants feel a little too real after the recent protests in London, so the film itself might prove to be even more timely and powerful than expected. 

After Chadha is done with the release of Christmas Karma and its press tour, we’re hoping the director will focus on the Bend It Like Beckham sequel the director has been chatting about a lot. In July, Chadha said she plans on getting the original cast, including Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley, back for the sequel. 

Christmas Karma is in UK cinemas 14th November to get you in that festive mood.
