Streaming giant Netflix is turning another very popular game into an animated series, and if youā€™re a fan of indie platformer Cuphead, youā€™re in luck. ā€˜Cause itā€™s Cuphead.

Called The Cuphead Show, the cartoon is set to adapt Studio MDHRā€™s critically acclaimed title for the small screen, with game creators Chad and Jared Moldenhauer overseeing the project as executive producers. Theyā€™ll be focusing on making sure that the series stays close to the look of the game.

ā€œWe are not going to be animating this (ourselves) because it would never be finished,ā€ Chad told IGN. ā€œThe current goal is to stay as far away from (computer-assisted) puppeteer animation as possibleā€¦It’s going to be hand-drawn but digitally. ā€˜Tradigitalā€™.ā€

The Cuphead Show wonā€™t be adult-themed, Chad admitted, but it wonā€™t be just for kids either.

ā€œIt’s safe for kids, but written so there are also things that adults find funny and appeals to a wider audience. It’s not a toddler show or a little kids cartoon. It’s safe to say that (the showrunners are) aiming for the same kind of vibe that the game hints at. They’ll be taking that idea and expanding it.ā€

The concept of a Cuphead animated TV venture forms part of a natural ouroboros. The 2017 game, with its hand-drawn style and 30s cartoon aesthetic, should be a natural fit for Netflix, who also stream Castlevania and have live-action shows like The Witcher and Halo in various stages of production.

THR were first to reveal news of The Cuphead Show, and their report also confirmed that Cuphead has now topped 4 million sales, with the game performing well on Nintendo Switch since its release back in April.

Wireframe #17 is out now.
