Indie spotlight time! The £35,000 budget thriller Derelict is premiering at FrightFest this year. More belowā€¦

Every year, the FrightFest Film Festival shows off the very best of independent genre filmmaking in the heart of Londonā€™s swanky urban utopia. This year (the festivalā€™s 25th birthday), one of the films lighting up the screen is British film noir Derelict.

Weā€™ve covered the trailer for this one before, and we reckon it looks a bit good. Here it is again, for reference:

But what, pray tell, is Derelict about? An excellent question. Hereā€™s a synopsis:

Abigail is a socially isolated, angry young woman who is struggling to come to terms with the brutal murder of her father some years prior. When she learns that one of her fatherā€™s murderers is about to be released from prison, Abi sets herself on a path of revenge. Matt is a young man whose life gets turned upside down by the return of his brother Ewan. The destinies of these lost souls crosses in ways that will tragically shape their lives.

Director Jonathan Zaurin says, ā€œIt’s an honour to be selected for a festival as respected and important as FrightFest and we can’t wait to show everybody what we’ve been working on for the last two years at the Odeon in Leicester Square, a location synonymous with world premieres!ā€

Film critic Guy Adams has apparently called it ā€œRashomon for the Sports Direct generation!ā€ Weā€™re not entirely sure what that means, but if it agrees that Sports Direct sets up its clothes racks too close together and makes it unnecessarily difficult to find running socks, then weā€™re on board.

FrightFest 2024 runs from August 22nd to 26th at Odeon Leicester Square and West End. Derelict is screening on Sunday 25th at 6:15pm.
