Russell Tovey has been teasing the upcoming Doctor Who spin-off The War Between The Land And The Sea. Find more about his comments below.
The War Between The Land And The Sea, a spin-off miniseries of Doctor Who, was announced last July to much interest. We’ve since heard very little about it, but star Russell Tovey chatted to Variety recently about his role in Carmen Emmi’s Plainclothes. Inevitably, the conversation turned to Doctor Who and what fans can expect from the spin-off.
“It has been one of the most joyful jobs I’ve ever done,” Tovey commented. He also mentioned he loves the character he plays, but wouldn’t expand on who that character might be. The actor previously played Midshipman Alonson Frame in two episodes in 2007 and 2010 respectively.
He did however reveal that the creatures in the series have appeared in the show previously.
“Well, the story of these creatures has appeared in Doctor Who episodes, it might have been in the ‘60s, but this has been a refresh of that,” Tovey mentioned.
Tovey also confirmed members of UNIT would appear in the series and that Jemma Redgrave would return to play Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.
Tovey also teased that while he wouldn’t be in prosthetics, his co-star Gugu Mbatha-Raw would be. Does this mean she won’t be plays Tish Jones, whom she portrayed in four episodes back in 2007? Or does something terrible happen to Tish, who is then morphed into something else?
“I think it’s got everything for the Doctor Who world, but it also feels completely fresh,” Tovey assured. “With Dylan Holmes Williams, Who’s director, it feels like an indie film. I wanted it to feel gritty and indie and dynamic in that way. And they were like, ‘Absolutely.’”
The War Between The Land And The Sea still doesn’t have a set release date but we can expect all five episodes to grace our screens sometime this year. We’ll bring you more news on it as we hear them.
