Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred do battle with Daleks, Cybermen and more, as Doctor Who series 25 comes to Blu-ray.
The superb collection of Doctor Who series-by-series Blu-ray sets is set to complete the Sylvester McCoy era of the show this October. That’s thanks to the news that series 25 of the original series will be landing on the format, with a huge collection of extra features.
The four stories that make up the series are Remembrance Of The Daleks (up there with the best ever Dalek stories in Doctor Who history), The Happiness Patrol (a terrific, slyly subversive dig at 1980s politics), the not-well-liked-but-I-liked-it 25th anniversary tale Silver Nemesis, and the really creepy The Greatest Show In The Galaxy. The latter not bad for a story filmed in a tent, when they couldn’t use the BBC’s usual studio facilities.
It’s an eight disc set that’s going to bring these four stories to the Blu-ray format, and the extra features list is so long that it’d fill the entirety of this very website – er, almost – were we to try to include it here.
All four stories, incidentally, are presented as optional extended editions, with fresh footage editing in. Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred lead the cast, and while the set isn’t on the cheap side, it’s a significant slice of underappreciated Doctor Who you’re getting here.
It should be noted that we have vested interest in Sylvester McCoy around these parts, incidentally. Might just have watched and bought these four stories several times across more than one format so far. The preorder has already gone in for the Blu-rays.
Just a note: do expect stock shortages here, but a cheaper version of the set, to head off the scalpers, will likely land next year.
