Doctor Who’s future looks a little bit brighter as BBC confirms the Time Lord “is going nowhere”. More on that below.
The Edinburgh TV Festival has come with a boatload of good news for TV fans. Not only has Gangs Of London been renewed for season 4, but the BBC has now confirmed that Doctor Who will also return.
“Rest assured, Doctor Who is going nowhere,” BBC chief content officer Kate Phillips told the audience in Edinburgh, per Deadline. “Disney has been a great partnership — and it continues with The War Between The Land And The Sea next year — but going forward, with or without Disney, Doctor Who will still be on the BBC … The Tardis is going nowhere.”
Disney still hasn’t publicly said whether it’s ceasing its partnership on Doctor Who, but the BBC is clearly prepared to move forward on its own if necessary.
Phillips’ promise comes just a few months after Russell T Davies said he didn’t know what was happening with the series. Back then, it seemed increasingly unclear whether Doctor Who would continue. The latest Time Lord, Ncuti Gatwa, exited at the end of the last series, and the iconic show’s future has been on uncertain ground ever since.
Deadline also took a look at Doctor Who’s viewing numbers, and they make it even clearer that the show’s return wasn’t a sure thing. Figures have been in steady decline for the past few seasons, with Jodie Whittaker’s final outing as the Doctor pulling in 4.9m views, while Gatwa’s final season pulled in just 3.2m pairs of eyes.
Buried in that comment, however, is the news that The War Between The Land And The Sea has been pushed back to 2026. The spin-off was due to air later this year, but that seems to have changed. No official release date has been set, but we’ll make sure to update you once we hear more on that.
