Director Neil Marshall has announced that we’ll probably never see a sequel to his werewolf horror, Dog Soldiers.

Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers is one of the defining werewolf movies of its time. The 2002 horror launched Marshall’s career and has become somewhat of a cult classic, receiving a shiny new 4K release in 2020.

A Dog Soldiers sequel has been in the works more or less since the release of the first film. It’s proven to be a bit of a struggle, however, and when Inverse asked Marshall where we are with the sequel in June 2024, Marshall didn’t seem too hopeful.

“I’ve a feeling it’s probably dead in the water because things have gone very quiet from the other side,” the director said, adding: “I’m not giving up, though; there’s still a possibility.”

Unfortunately, it seems that the possibility of another Dog Soldiers ever seeing the light of day is completely non-existent now.

Marshall uploaded a poster for the proposed film, bearing the title Dog Soldiers: The Underdogs, on Instagram. In an accompanying message, he announced that project is all but dead.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that this teaser poster is probably as close as we’ll ever get to a Dog Soldiers sequel,” Marshall wrote, adding that he’d been trying to negotiate the rights for the sequel with the US rights holder but was eventually ghosted.

“Unfortunately these negotiations came to a sudden and unexpected halt when, earlier this year, we were due to finalize and sign the agreements and… they disappeared. Vanished. Cut off all communication,” Marshall wrote. “Refuse to answer emails or calls. Why, you ask. I don’t know why. That’s the point. We simply don’t know what happened or why, but the end result is that we don’t have the rights to make a sequel without this deal in place, thus rendering it effectively dead.”

It’s a sad day for anyone patiently waiting for any news on the long-promised sequel. If you’re looking for your next werewolf fix, Leigh Whannell’s The Wolf Man is heading into UK cinemas in January.
