Announced by DC Studiosā James Gunn, upcoming animated movie Dynamic Duo will feature two generations of The Boy Wonder, aka Robin.
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has announced yet another film in Warner Brosā stable of superhero characters. Dynamic Duo is an animated film that will focus on the early days of future Batman sidekicks Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, before they became known to the wider world as Robin (at separate junctures, of course). The film will follow their exploits as young thieves, who choose Dynamic Duo as their team name.
Well, future Robins in existing DC canon, that is. Thereās no word as to whether this animated film will be part of the DC Universe or exist as an āElseworldsā project, outside of the shared continuity that Gunn is building in the style of Marvelās own MCU. Creature Commandoes, due to air on Max in December, is animated series set in the DC Universe. Next year will see the release of the Gunnās action film, Superman: Legacy.
Gunn, Peter Safran, Theresa Andersson, and Matt Reeves (more on him in a moment) will produce Dynamic Duo. Andersson and Arthur Mintz will co-direct, using a form of animation called āMomoā which is a blend of CGI and stop-motion animation and live-action footage. Gunn announced the film on Twitter (via Dark Horizons).
Speaking of Matt Reeves, the director of The Batman has reportedly been part of discussions with Warner Bros boss David Zaslav and James Gunn, focusing on the possibility of bringing his take on the Dark Knight into mainstream DCU continuity. This is despite both Gunn and Reeves being very clear over the last few years that Robert Pattinsonās take on the character would sit outside of DCU continuity in that āElseworldsā bracket.
So why the reported change of heart? According to The InSneider, that lies with Warner Bros boss, David Zaslav. The studio head reportedly wants a Batman in his DC Universe and doesnāt seem keen to wait. With the planned take on Batman: The Brave And The Bold seemingly losing traction since the projectās proposed director Andy Muschietti made The Flash last year ā a critical and commercial failure.
With no new Batman in sight, it looks like Zaslav might be willing to ignore the carefully-crafted tone of Matt Reevesā film (and the upcoming sequel), not to mention the plans of DCU creative impresario, James Gunn, just so he can have his Batman straight away. Assuming this report is accurate, of course.
With Dynamic Duo bringing us two Robins in the form of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, it would go some way towards making up for the lack of cinematic Boy Wonders in the years since 1995ās Batman Forever and 1997ās Batman & Robin.
