Edgar Wright’s take on Stephen King’s dystopian novel The Running Man is landing in 2025. Plus, more casting news too.

If feels like we’ve been waiting forever for Edgar Wright to get his take on The Running Man up and erm, well, running, but we’re edging closer to seeing the film materialising. Not least because we now have a release date to look forward to: Paramount Pictures has announced the official date for the film’s debut and it’s just over a year away. The Running Man is set for release on 21st November 2025.

There’s more too. The Hollywood Reporter is stating that Love Lies Bleeding star Katy O’Brian has been cast to star opposite Glen Powell in the upcoming film. O’Brian earned praise for her role in Rose Glass’ second feature which released earlier this year.

In that film, Katy O’Brian played a bodybuilder struggling not to succumb to her darker instincts. As well as being praised, the actor’s turn saw her secure roles in the next Mission: Impossible film while also appearing in Twisters, one of this year’s summer blockbusters.

Her profile continues to rise and we’re curious to see how she will fit into Wright’s film. Edgar Wright has already said his adaptation will hew much closer to Stephen King’s original book, in comparison to the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring action movie which took the basic premise of the story before veering very far from the source material. There’s only a couple of female roles in the original novella, but of course there’s always the possibility that O’Brian could be playing a gender-flipped character or one that has been invented for Wright’s adaptation.

Our own Ryan Lambie has already penned a few thoughts about the direction Wright’s adaptation could take and you can find them here. We’re hoping that O’Brian’s role is a developed one though, perhaps taking on the role of the lead hunter, trained killers who are experts at taking down whichever sorry soul happens to be ‘The Running Man’ on that particular episode.

We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
