Emilia Pérez is coming to Netflix in the UK, and here’s the trailer for the film, which is expected to do a fair amount of business at the Oscars.
2024 is shaping up to be a good year for Selena Gomez. She is currently starring in one of Hulu/Disney+’s most popular shows Only Murders In The Building, which was recently renewed for a fifth series.
As if that wasn’t enough, she is producing and guest starring in the pilot episode of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, the sequel to the show that made her a star, which will stream on Disney+ from the 29th of October.
And now there’s a film too.
When it premiered in Cannes, Emilia Pérez received a standing ovation, and later went on to win the Grand Jury prize and the Best Actress award, which was shared between the three leads. Finally, we’re edging close to a UK release for it as well.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Overqualified and overexploited, Rita (Zoe Saldana) uses her talents as a lawyer for a big firm in Mexico more interested in laundering criminals than serving justice. But an unexpected way out opens up for her, to help cartel boss Manitas retire from the business and carry out the plan he’s been secretly preparing for years: to finally become the woman he’s always dreamed of being.
Karla Sofía Gascón, Saldana and Gomez star in the film. The cast also includes Adriana Paz, Edgar Ramírez and Mark Ivanir.
The film is written and directed by Jacques Audiard, who previously made the terrific Rust And Bone. It’s a rare film that can combine the mafia movie with a musical, but the film has been getting rave reviews and it will be interesting to see what a wider audience makes of it.
Emilia Pérez is only getting a theatrical release in the US, those of us in the UK will have to make do with watching it on Netflix, where it will stream from the 13th November.
