Noah Hawley and Rob Mac are working to adapt Far Cry games into an anthology series. More on that news below.
Noah Hawley is a busy man. On top of working on Alien: Earth season 2, he’s also developing a new series based on the Far Cry video game franchise with Rob Mac (previously McElhenney, of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Wrexham football club fame). FX has ordered a full series, but all plot details are being kept tightly under wraps. When aren’t they, really?
Variety reports the news and also reveals that the series will take the games’ anthology format, making each season a different story with a different cast. Mac will also star in the series.
The series is set to air on Hulu in the US and Disney+ elsewhere in the world. Both Hawley and Mac have an existing, long-running relationship with FX Networks. Mac’s It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has completed its 17th season earlier this year and a fifth season of Welcome To Wrexham is in the works.
Hawley worked with FX previously with all five seasons of Fargo and this year’s Alien: Earth which was finally renewed for season 2 earlier this month.
“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized,” Mac said. “Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”
Hawley also chimed in: “What I love about the ‘Far Cry’ game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of ‘Fargo’ is a variation on a theme,” Hawley commented. “To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”
The Far Cry games are anthology first-person shooters. Six main games have been released with five spin-off games as well as novels, webseries, animated Netflix series and a 2008 direct-to-video film.
