When a movie actor or director passes on, we invariably consider all of their great performances or cinematic masterpieces as we begin to eulogise. But what about the films that didn’t quite work? What about the final film they ever did? Are they often masterpieces, signs of a talent gone to seed, or forgotten gems?
That’s the question Last Take, a brand new Film Stories podcast from author and podcaster AJ Black and podcaster Sam Stokes, seeks to answer by looking specifically at the final films of legendary cinematic names we all know, and sometimes love.
From Billy Wilder to Val Kilmer, across the first season you will hear a diverse account of very different films and careers from all ages of cinema, as Black attests: “The key is that we intend to try, where possible, to watch the entire filmography of a director, and as much of an actor’s as we can. The focus is on the final film, the ‘last take’, but we want to bring the career, cultural and personal context of who we’re discussing to the conversation. This is an idea I don’t think anyone has done before–a rarity in the podcast world now–or at least not to any degree of renown, so hopefully we are on fertile ground to explore many legendary cinematic names through a fresh lens.”
Stokes adds: “Last Take is a wonderful opportunity for me to combine two of my very favourite activities in the world of film: celebrating the legends of cinema and embarking on movie-watching projects on those directors and actors I’ve always wanted to explore more deeply.”
The first season of Last Take begins with an introduction to the show from AJ (Tony) and Sam, discussing the creation of the podcast and laying out who will be covered across the run.
