As ground floor animators contemplate an insecure future, with companies openly talking about using generative AI to do their work, at the other end of the scale, some people are doing very nicely indeed. In this case, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and Idina Menzel, who have pocketed an extraordinary amount of money for their voice and promotional services on the next two Frozen movies.

Disney is already working on the upcoming Frozen III, and it’s already confirmed that Frozen 4 isn’t going to be too far behind. Over at The Wrap, the outlet is reporting that Bell, Gad and Menzel have signed voice deals for the next two films that will earn them an apparent – gulp – $60m apiece. $180m on three key pieces of voice talent. That’s more than the entire reported budget for the 2013 original (a film I still love, lest you think I’ve got my pissy pants on.)

The deal for the three leads covers both their initial salaries and back end bonus payments as well, and this locks them in for a good five years or so I’d imagine. In fairness, I’d be happy to be locked into a film project for a bit of I could trouser $60m for my troubles. Small problem: can’t sing. Bugger.

Anyway: it’s been confirmed too that Jennifer Lee is back to direct Frozen III, It’s not clear as of yet if her co-director, Chris Buck, is going to be involved too.

What is clear is that the movie is going to be in cinemas on 24th November 2027, and at a point where Disney is basically looking to remake everything else in search of a solid hit, this might just be the most important franchise now on the company’s books.

Genuinely fascinated though to work out what $60m for voice work amounts to as a day rate. I’ll just save up for a calculator powerful enough to work that out.
