Pop sensation Billy Eilish has revealed that Avatar and Piranha 2 director James Cameron is co-directing her concert movie.

The latest Avatar opus from writer-director James Cameron – subtitled Fire And Ash – is mere weeks away from release. In the meantime, pop star Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell has revealed that she’s collaborating with the maker of blue sci-fi movies to make a concert film called Hit Me Hard And Soft.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given Cameron’s mastery of the form, it’ll be presented in 3D. Eilish broke the news on her Instagram, describing the collaboration as a ‘dream come true.’

”This is one of my favorite tours everrrrrr and being able to capture it and co-direct this film with [James Cameron] has truly been a dream come true,” Eilish wrote (via Variety). “Can’t wait for you all to see it.”

Eilish had previously hinted at working on something with the director, (” I can’t say much about it but what I can say is that I’m working on something very, very special with somebody named James Cameron,” she said at one of her gigs in July), but this is the first time she’s specified exactly what it is.

Cameron’s Lightstorm entertainment has a deal with Meta to make 3D entertainments for the latter corporation’s stereoscopic headsets, so the Eilish film will likely end up being viewed through those at some point. But Eilish also revealed on Instagram that her movie will get a run in cinemas. Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour (Live In 3D) is due for release on the 30th March 2026.

The money-making properties of concert movies were brought into sharp focus in 2023 with Taylor Swift: The Eras Concert, which made about $267m worldwide. Given it was made for a relative snip at $10m-ish, Eras could be considered the Avatar of concert movies. We’ll have too wait and see whether Eilish and Cameron can steal that particular crown.
