Actor turned filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg is set to write and direct a musical comedy starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti.
Actor turned filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg’s next film, A Real Pain, isn’t due out until early 2025, but his film project after that has reportedly been set up already.
It’s said to be an untitled musical comedy starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti. With Wicked likely to whip up a storm at the box office this weekend (Wizard Of Oz reference!), musicals are clearly back in vogue among Hollywood studios.
As first published by Deadline, the synopsis for Eisenberg’s movie reads as follows:
The film follows a shy woman who is unexpectedly cast in a local production of an original musical. Under the spell of the strong-willed and enigmatic director, she loses herself in the role and the high-stakes world of this community theater production.
Moore previously worked with Eisenberg on When You Finish Saving The World. Eisenberg will write and direct. We don’t have a name for the film yet, but we’re confident that Eisenberg is working on that.
Eisenberg began his career playing awkward, nerdy characters in films like Adventureland and Zombieland, and has now branched out into directing movies as well.
As an actor, arguably his breakout role was playing Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s 2010 film The Social Network. Since then, he’s appeared in the likes of Batman V Superman, American Ultra and the Now You See Me films. The third film will be directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay by Eric Warren Singer, Seth Grahame-Smith and Michael Lesslie. It will be released on the 14th November 2025.
He has also built up that career behind the camera, making his directorial debut in 2022 with When You Finish Saving The World. Eisenberg writes, directs and stars in his new film A Real Pain, opposite Kieran Culkin. The synopsis for that film – due in UK cinemas early next year – reads as follows:
From writer / director Jesse Eisenberg based on his own family history, mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) & Benji (Kieran Culkin) reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the pair’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history. A poignant, funny exploration of the unexpected permutations of intergenerational trauma.
We’ll keep you updated as we hear more on Eisenberg’s musical.
