Lady Gaga has been responding to the negative response to Joker: Folie A Deux, arguing that you have to resist the fear of failure.
I’m one of those people who firmly thinks that the Golden Raspberry Awards – the Razzies – belong in the bin. Less about puncturing egos and actually highlighting the worst films of the year, more about piling on big films that didn’t do well, I’ve just read that this year, Joker: Folie A Deux is among the nominations for worst picture, and Lady Gaga is nominated for worst supporting actress.
Itās clear that many people weren’t keen on Joker: Folie A Deux, director Todd Phillips’ follow-up to the billion dollar grossing, Oscar-winning Joker movie. Surely even its harshest critics would put it down as a noble failure than an outright piece of trash? By distance it seemed to me the best comic book movie of 2024, but what do I know.
Anyway, the negative response to the film has come up in a new interview with Lady Gaga, and fair does to her for the way she deals with the question. In a conversation with Elle, she simply says that “people just sometimes don’t like some things”, adding that “it’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.”
Given how the box office panned out for 2024, it’s inevitable we’re going to get more fodder along the lines of Deadpool And Wolverine than Joker: Folie A Deux, but Lady Gaga is also insistent that you have to resist the fear of something failing. “When that makes its way into your life, that can be hard to get control of. It’s part of the mayhem”, she adds.
The lead creatives of Joker: Folie A Deux certainly don’t need my help, and few of them are looking for where their next meal is coming from off the back of the film’s financial disappointments. But also: they took a swing. When did the people behind the Razzies ever do that?
