The Bride, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, is now rumoured to be a musical, with a report of ‘big dance numbers’ in the film.

We’re all looking forward to The Bride, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming reimagining of The Bride Of Frankenstein. There’s plenty to look forward to here, including a talented director, a stacked cast and a classic monster tale. Now, it seems like we might be getting even more bang for our buck with the revelation that the film will contain some ‘big dance numbers’.

Naturally, that’s leading to speculation that we might just have another big budget musical on the way from Warner Bros.

The other musical is of course Joker: Folie a Deux which arrives in cinemas next month. That’s a piece of big-budget, intellectual property-driven cinema that is set to contain lots of singing and dancing. Warner Bros has also backed Gyllenhaal’s The Bride which according to one of its stars, may just be taking the same approach.

Peter Saarsgard has told The Hollywood Reporter that the film is “punk,” “violent” “wildly romantic.”

So far, so good. However, he also added in this intriguing nugget: “there are big dance numbers and stuff in the movie. It’s the best thing I’ve ever read … To me, it’s both a big movie for adults and a big movie that’s for teenagers. It’s what everyone hopes for and tries to solve in making a big movie.”

As mentioned, the film is said to be a a reimagining of James Whale’s 1935 classic The Bride Of Frankenstein and in it, ‘a lonely Frankenstein monster (Christian Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride (Jessie Buckley) is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.’

Along with the actors mentioned above, we’re also getting Annette Bening, Penelope Cruz and Jake Gyllenhaal in the cast. That’s quite the ensemble.

Production began earlier this summer and wrapped recently. The film is set for release in October of 2025, with an IMAX run already booked.

Pretty much everything about this – from the release date to the similar story setup – not to mention the “punk’ stylings, mean that it could be a natural successor for Warner Bros for this year’s Joker: Folie a Deux, which is expected to big numbers for the studio. We’ll let you know more on The Bride as we hear it.
