Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! is 30 years old this year – and heading to the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format for the first time.
Curious film, is Tim Burton’s 1996 sci-fi comedy Mars Attacks! Conceived and in production before Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day hit in the summer of the same year (in part leading to the UK release of Burton’s film being put back to 1997), it certainly suffered at the box office by coming out second.
With a huge ensemble cast, it does remain a whole lot of comedy fun, even if it’s probably best for its moments rather than its whole. Anarchic is a pretty good word to describe it, not least when Tom Jones pops up in a fairly crucial narrative role!
Over time, its reputation has grown, and Warner Bros is banking on nostalgia for it being high, with the news that the film is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time later this year.
Given the price it’s charging too for one of the sets, it’s banking on nostalgia being very high indeed!
The two Steelbook editions of the film have gone up for preorder now, albeit with a firm release date as of yet. Over the summer seems a good bet, though. A standard release will follow, but for now get to choose from a 4K Steelbook edition, or a special 30th anniversary Steelbook.
The cheaper one – currently listed at £35 – can be found here.
The, er, ‘less economic’ version can be found here, currently selling for a cool £55.
No idea what’s in the collector’s set as of yet, but it’s bound to be limited, and it’s bound to sell out really quickly.
We’ll leave you for the minute with the synopsis for the film…
A fleet of Martian spacecraft surrounds the world’s major cities and all of humanity waits to see if the extraterrestrial visitors have, as they claim, “come in peace.” U.S. President James Dale receives assurance from science professor Donald Kessler that the Martians’ mission is a friendly one. But when a peaceful exchange ends in the total annihilation of the U.S. Congress, military men call for a full-scale nuclear retaliation.
