It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster to get this far, with filmmaker Martin Scorsese declaring he was keen to get out there fast again after making 2023’s Killers Of The Flower Moon. As it turns out, that was not to be, with the acclaimed director instead linked with a bunch of projects that were set to go that, well, didn’t.
He was noodling around a biopic of Frank Sinatra, then there was a film he was going to make about Jesus. Then there was The Devil In The White City, which was being set up at 20th Century Studios. Oh, and what about the crime mafia movie in Hawaii with Dwayne Johnson? Over past 12 to 18 months, it looked like any four of those films could happen.
Instead though, the one that appears to have bubbled to the top is What Happens At Night, a film that’s been developed at Studiocanal, and might now bring in some Apple money to help it get made.
There’s star wattage here too, with both Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence set to star in the movie. It’s a ghost story this one, based on a book by Peter Cameron and adapted for the screen by Patrick Marber. It looks primarily contained to a largely deserted hotel (on the surface, it feels like it has a tinge of Shutter Island about it), and the plan is to get it shooting as quickly as January. That might even mean the movie is ready by the end of 2026, but no announcement has been made about that.
Still, it does look like Scorsese finally has a project that’s going forward, although very conscious that’d been said already this year.
