Netflix has acquired the rights to Nic Pizzolatto’s new series and the project will reunite Pizzolatto with Matthew McConaughey.
The first season of True Detective remains potentially its best. Although season 4, subtitled Night Country, gives it a run for its money, that first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, was a brutal, enticing run of TV.
True Detective is still going strong with more news on its next series announced just days ago, but the show’s creator Nic Pizzolatto is looking ahead. After departing the series as a showrunner after season 3 – although still remaining involved as an executive producer – Pizzolatto is now planning a new, hopefully just as popular series focused on two men.
Variety reports that Netflix has acquired the rights to Pizzolatto’s new series, which doesn’t seem to have a title yet or at least one hasn’t made its way to the trades. The series is currently in active development and is set to reunite Pizzolatto with McConaughey. Cole Hauser is also set to star, but the two stars’ contracts are still being sorted.
This is the second time McConaughey and Pizzolatto have eyed a reunion. McConaughey was at one point rumoured to star in another Pizzolatto series, The Redeemer, but the project never ended up moving ahead.
McConaughey will also star in Brothers, a comedy series based on the real life friendship between himself and Woody Harrelson whom the actor starred with in True Detective, Surfer, Dude and EDtv. Both actors will play fictional versions of themselves and the series is supposedly heading to AppleTV+, but experienced a major setback after production was halted in June 2025 due to creative differences that saw showrunner David West Read leave the series completely.
Here’s hoping Pizzolatto and McConaughey manage to finally work together again with this new series.
