Sony Pictures is now developing a movie around Metal Gear Solid, the long-running game franchise. More on that below.
Video game movies and TV shows are very popular now and they seem to be getting better too, with Exit 8 heading into cinemas imminently and garnering excellent reviews.
But now, Sony Pictures is tackling one of the gaming industry’s giants, attempting to bring it to the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the studio is set to develop a Metal Gear Solid movie and has hired Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein to direct it. If those names ring a bell, it’s because they recently directed Final Destination: Bloodlines.
“Zach and Adam are thrilling storytellers, masters of visuals and suspense, and two of the most impressive director/producers working today. With projects across all the company’s film labels, we are so happy to create a home for them, and proud to have them as part of the Sony family,” said Sanford Panitch, Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group President.
The movie comes from a brand new first-look production deal the directors have just signed with Sony. Sony nabbed the directing pair up after Lopovsky and Stein brought the Final Destination series back from the dead with Bloodlines, which earned a very respectable $315m at the global box office.
A Metal Gear Solid movie has been in the plans for a good while now but one has never actually been greenlit. Back in 2018, Kong: Skull Island director and a massive fan of the games, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, was attached to a movie adaptation with Oscar Isaac rumoured to star as Solid Snake, but that never saw the light of day.
The Metal Gear game franchise has been going for nearly 40 years and a movie is certainly due now. We’ll bring you more news on it as they reach our desks.
