2021’s Mitchells Vs The Machines remains one of the most underrated animated movies of the last few years. Despite receiving a well-earned Oscar-nomination, director and co-writer Mike Rianda’s science fiction comedy rarely gets a mention as one of the finest movies from Sony Pictures Animation.
Thankfully, a sequel is finally, officially on the way. As Variety details here, Sony Pictures Animation is once again making the film and Netflix will distribute. The story also mentions that the streamer and Sony are planning to be a bit more collaborative with the sequel’s release. Not entirely sure what that means, but we’re certainly hoping to see Mitchells Vs The Machines 2 on the big screen.
Guillermo Martinez and JP Sans will be directing the film from a script by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, aka the Molyneux Sisters. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are producing and Mitchells Vs The Machines 2 is reportedly starting production in early 2026.
The first film followed the titular family on a road trip to get their daughter, Katie (voiced by Abbi Jacobson) to film school across the country. The ride became a bit bumpy when Olivia Colman’s AI planned a worldwide robot rebellion, hoping to take out the entire human race.
The first film used the same style of animation as 2018’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which received plenty of praise. Another important element of the film was Rianda and co-writer Jeff Rowe’s decision to write Katie as queer, but not make it a source of conflict between her and her dad.
No word on what the sequel might involve in terms of plot, but we suspect more machines will cause trouble for the Mitchell family. There’s also no word if Jacobson, as well as Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett and Rianda will return to reprise their voice roles.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all things Mitchells Vs The Machines 2.
