Devolver Digital has permission to strut as this month draws to a close, because its latest game, My Friend Pedro, has shifted a quarter of a million units across PC and Switch in the week of its debut. To put that in perspective, Devolver was pretty chuffed when Katana Zero sold 100,000 copies when it was first released back in April, so My Friend Pedroās massive success is clearly a cause for celebration.
Pitched as a āviolent balletā, the game is a strategic shoot āem up where you wake up in a seedy underworld and set about killing everyone you can ā in cinematic slow motion if you fancy ā all while a sentient banana happily cheers you on and occasionally offers you a few tips for creating maximum carnage. In other words, itās extremely fun and very much like how youād imagine a John Wick video game would be, if you didnāt already know what the real John Wick video is going to be like. And if John Wick had a sentient banana friend.
Devolver has released a very cool behind the scenes video to go with its 250K announcement. Here, developers DeadToast explain why the banana is called Pedro, among other thingsā¦
Devolver is having a great 2019 so far. Along with Katana Zero and My Friend Pedro, Metroidvania release Gato Roboto and space admin game Observation have also been very well received. At this point, it doesnāt seem like thereās much getting in the way of the publisher blasting even farther into the stratosphere.
