Former Kickstarter Antstream is off to the races this week in the UK after a successful closed beta. The Netflix-esque retro games streaming service has now launched for PC, Android and Mac, and will set you back £9.99 per month.
The project started back in 2008 as the dream of CEO Steve Cottam, and the team behind it have previously worked for Nintendo, Sega, Atlus, Square Enix, Ocean, and Konami. Eidos president Ian Livingstone also acts as Chairman, while other team members founded the likes of Playdemic and TT games.
A massive catalogue of licensed games for Amiga, C64, ZX Spectrum and more is now up and running. You can check out the full games list right here, but the day one streaming titles included Double Dragon, Target Renegade, Xenon and Zool. There also might be future opportunities to add to the Antstream catalogue if you have the licence to a classic game or a bunch of titles.
The reception to the Antstream launch is a little muted right now. Backers pledged over seventy grand to bring the project to fruition, but those who are new to the service are wondering why there’s no free trial to check out how smoothly it runs or if it’s worth forking out for. Hundreds of people who pledged to the KS got a free subscription to Antstream, but it might be nice to pull in potential customers by offering even a short trial. There’s no word yet if there are plans to do so, however.
