Richard Attenborough’s Magic is getting a remake and Sam Raimi will be producing the new version. Few more details below.
One of Richard Attenborough’s least appreciated directing works is 1978’s Magic. Written by William Goldman, based on his novel of the same name, the film followed a failed magician whose new ventriloquist’s dummy, Fats, brings him fame and fortune. Unfortunately, Fats also comes with a side of homicide.
As is the way in Hollywood nowadays, Magic is getting its own modern remake, courtesy of Lionsgate. Bloody Disgusting reports that Sam Raimi is on producing duties together with Roy Lee, Chris Hammond and Tim Sullivan.
The script will be courtesy of Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, who previously wrote Freddy vs. Jason and 2009’s Friday The 13th reboot. The pair also penned 2017’s Baywatch and are working with Raimi on his upcoming 2026 film Send Help.
No word on who might be directing the new Magic, but horror tends to be an excellent genre for new, emerging filmmakers.
The original starred Anthony Hopkins in the lead role and like the film itself, it’s hugely underappreciated work from the actor. His demented performance is one for the ages, and his turn is supported by committed work from Ann-Margret as his love interest, Peggy.
With M3GAN 2.0 receiving abysmal reviews – we didn’t mind it! – and The Conjuring bowing out with Last Rites, there’s a doll-shaped hole in Hollywood’s horror market. Horror films about dolls have been a lasting theme for filmmakers. Just look at Child’s Play, Annabelle and The Boy. Even the original The Conjuring’s James Wan made a doll horror, Dead Silence, early on in his career.
We’ll make sure to keep you updated on all things Magic.
