David Arquette returned to the Scream saga with Scream 5, but still has issues where his character, Dewey, is concerned.
Ahead of a multi-city tour with the original Scream movie, to mark its 30th birthday, David Arquette took part in a Reddit Ask My Anything sessions earlier this week. In it, he’s very open about how the director of the first four Scream films, Wes Craven, changed his life, and his gratitude for that.
We’re getting into spoilers once we’re through this paragraph. Don’t scroll past Gary The Spoiler Squirrel if you don’t want spoilers for the Scream saga.
Still here?
Right. In the fifth Scream film, which went out under the name of Scream even if I’ll call it Scream 5 here, David Arquette’s character, Dewey, made a return to the saga. Just not in great shape, by himself, and living in a trailer.
“When I first read the script they did not tell me the fate of my character”, Arquette has admitted. Originally enthused as he read it and thinking Dewey’s role was a good one, “I got to the part and my heart sank. I went to the end of the script and I saw that my character did not come back.”
It’s no secret, and he’s been open about it, that Arquette’s gone through significant challenges in his life, and he talked about how Dewey was, in Scream 5, “first written … as a real alcoholic and I have had my personal struggles and I am sober now, but in the time in between Scream 4 and Scream 5 I had gone into recovery. I told them I felt like they wrote Dewey more based on my experience than what Dewey would really be like. So they ended up cutting a lot of the alcohol use even though there is a little bit of it in there.”
That said, it didn’t change the fate of the character, and Arquette admitted that “I’m still really upset” about it, “as a lot of fans are. I often got told they did Dewey dirty.”
The full AMA session can be found right here.
The ‘Behind The Scream’ tour is limited to the US at the moment, but on the off chance it makes it to the UK, we’ll let you know…
