Producer Sue Vertue suggests that the world of Sherlock might not be complete: ā€œthere is a future for itā€, she says of a potential revival.

It was all the way back in 2017 that the massively successful television hit Sherlock transmitted its last episode to date. The show that made Benedict Cumberbatch a star, and co-starring the brilliant Martin Freeman, it also did Andrew Scott no harm at all.

The contemporary take on Sherlock Holmes was created and overseen by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, with Sue Vertue on producing duties. And after Mark Gatiss had hinted about a possible feature film earlier in 2024, it’s Sue Vertue who this time has kept the flame flickering.

She was asked about the possibility of a Sherlock revival at an event in London yesterday. She had the chance to shut the idea down, and – as you can guess from the headline here – she didn’t do that.

Instead, she said that “we love that show and there is a future for it”. You can’t accuse us of clickbait there: those were her words.

There are the logistics of course. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are both busy actors, so scheduling would remain a hefty challenge. Vertue did throw a little doubt, saying that Sherlock’s return was a “maybe… if everyone wants to do it”.

“It’s just getting everybody aligned, it’s getting the actors to want to do it.”

Of course, all of this is a long way away from actors on a set, and it’s unclear if Steven Moffat or Mark Gatiss have been working on more scripts. Furthermore, would Sherlock take the Peaky Blinders route, and head for a movie? Again, couldn’t tell you. But there does seem to be some appetite to do this. Mark Gatiss wants to do it. Sue Vertue wants to do it. You can bet that whatever round of interviews Moffat, Cumberbatch and Freeman tackle next, they’ll be asked too.

No doubt all other websites will neglect to report on this news, so we’ll have your back instead.
