You know what it’s like. You’ve pre-ordered that expensive game remaster you always dreamed of, you have the 4K UHD box set of your favourite film franchise, but what of the cutscenes from Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2? What of them? Must they be lost to the sands of time while all this other media ascends to its futuristic new form?
Wait, you weren’t thinking about this? It wasn’t keeping you up at night? This wasn’t even what you ordered…? Oh, well, it’s happened now, sorry. YouTube channel ClassiCinematics is upscaling a whole bunch of old game cutscenes every month and now it’s Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2’s turn. The beauty of these ones specifically is that they’re still quite incredible, and of course include iconic character actors like Tim Curry, Jonathan Pryce, Ray Wise and JK Simmons, so it seems like an excellent choice.
“Old game cinematics were ambitious, with pre-rendered videos being able to provide a much higher visual quality than real-time rendering. Blizzard used high quality models and textures, Westwood used full motion video, Bioware… was there too. But in each case, the resolutions they were rendered at limit their quality,” ClassiCinematics opines. “These days, we can use AI to upscale these cinematics by filling in missing detail. While it will never look as good as rendering natively at a high resolution, there can still be marked improvement in visual fidelity.”

These’ll keep you busy for a little while, but maybe not all the way up to those official Command & Conquer remake releases.
