Sony has acquired Insomniac Games

As of July 28th, Spider-Man PS4 had slung a staggering 13.2 million copies globally, so itā€™s perhaps not too surprising to hear that Sony has decided to buy the titleā€™s developer, Insomniac Games.

The open world game has shot past Batman: Arkham City in the U.S. as the biggest selling superhero endeavour since its launch in September, 2018, and since Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man when it comes the movie adventures of the iconic wall-crawler, the company is likely covering all its bases going forward, and we can probably safely assume that a sequel to the acclaimed PS4 game is now in the works.

Still, Insomniac has managed to retain its indie developer status for over two decades while maintaining its excellent working relationship with Sony on things like Ratchet & Clank and Spider-Man, so the deal must have been pretty sweet for Sony to finally put a stopper in the possibility of Insomniac straying elsewhere.

ā€œInsomniac Games is one of the most highly-acclaimed development studios in the industry and their legacy of best-in-class storytelling and gameplay is unparalleled,ā€ said Shawn Layden, Chairman of SIE WWS, in a statement. ā€œWe have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family. The addition of Insomniac Games to SIE WWS reiterates our commitment to developing world-class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform.ā€

Insomniac CEO Ted Price added ā€œWeā€™ve enjoyed a special relationship with PlayStation practically since our inception. Our partnership amplifies our potential, and Marvelā€™s Spider-Man was a testament to this. Weā€™re excited to take the next step in our growth alongside our longtime WWS partners. Most of all, we look forward to delivering fresh, new experiences for our fans.ā€
