Thanks to the success of the Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remaster, Square Enix is now “considering” more remasters of its old hits.

Final Fantasy XVI may point to a more cinematic future for the franchise, but the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series, released in April, helped a new generation of players revisit its past. Gathering together the first six games in the Final Fantasy saga, the remasters included sensitively reworked sprites and music, and some handy quality-of-life improvements, such as turning off random encounters or tweaking the XP you earned from battles.

In fact, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster games were such a success that Square Enix is reportedly “considering” reviving more games from its back catalogue for similar treatment.

As spotted by VGC, the firm held an annual shareholders meeting recently, and during a Q&A session, one shareholder asked, “Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remaster has been well received. Are there plans to remaster other titles? Personally, I would like to play Xenogears.”

“We will refrain from sharing information about new titles,” a Square Enix board member replied, “but we are considering various ideas within the company and hope that you will look forward to forthcoming announcements.”

Square Enix does, of course, have a long and much-celebrated library of games to its name. Going right back to the 1980s, when Square and Enix were separate companies, the firms were putting out such much-loved classics as Dragon Quest and its numerous sequels and spin-offs, as well as cult items like ActRaiser, Violinist of Hameln and Bushido Blade.

Square and Enix merged in 2003, creating the Japanese industry powerhouse that has since developed or published such much-loved corkers as Kingdom Hearts, Nier, or, er, this year’s Forspoken.

All joking aside, the thought of seeing more sensitively remastered takes on Square Enix’s older classics is an enticing one, especially if they’re up to the quality of the recent Live A Live. Chrono Trigger Pixel Remaster, anyone?
