Mike Flanagan’s next Stephen King adaptation, The Dark Tower, is still in the works as confirmed by King himself.
Mike Flanagan’s TV adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower has been in the works since 2022 but updates on the project have been slim. Some of us have been wondering whether it was even happening anymore. The last time we had an official update on it, Amazon boss Vernon Sanders assured his company is “passionate” about it and having conversations with Flanagan on a weekly basis.
Thankfully, King himself confirmed to IGN that The Dark Tower is still alive.
āAll I can say is, itās happening,ā King told the outlet during an interview about the latest adaptation of his work, The Monkey.
āI am writing stuff now, and I think thatās all I want to say, because the next thing you know, Iāll stir up a bunch of stuff I donāt necessarily want to stir up yet. Iām in process right now, and to say too much feels like a jinx,” he added.
This led to some outlets reporting that King was writing the script for The Dark Tower, but King took to Bluesky to clarify he wasn’t writing for the adaptation specifically. It does seem, however, that the author is working with Flanagan on the project at least in some capacity.
Flanagan has previously adapted King’s Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep and the upcoming Life Of Chuck, so the director is certainly experienced in bringing King’s stories to life. Heās also working on a TV adaptation of one of King’s best-known novels, Carrie.
The Dark Tower series, which consists of eight novels in total, was previously adapted into a film in 2017, but was largely panned by critics. The first of The Dark Tower novels was released in 1982, although King began writing it in the 70s, and the latest book in the series hit shelves in 2012.
The project is still in relatively early stages with no word on whether it’ll adapt all of the novels or one at a time, but at least we now have confirmation that Amazon is still working on it and that King is on board.
More on The Dark Tower as we hear it.
