Terry Gilliam is set to direct another film, with Carnival starring Johnny Depp, Jason Momoa, Adam Driver, Emma Laird and more.
It’s beginning to look increasingly like Terry GIlliam’s next film will go before cameras imminently. Originally titled The Carnival At The End Of Days, it’s a story that sees Satan off in search of new humans to put before God as a new Adam and Eve. Gilliam’s always been something of a provocateur, and this now project – now simply titled Carnival – sounds no different.
Sets are apparently being built for the film which is set to be shot in Rome’s Cinecitta Studio, the largest film studio in Europe, with the report at Box Office stating that the production will employ over 3,000 people. The reported $30-40m that Gilliam needed to make the film seems to have come via Italian company Notorious Pictures, which partly explains the location of the shoot.
It all sounds rather epic and in that sense, it has a cast to match.
Johnny Depp has been cast as Satan, who roams the world looking to get people to hell – all the better to keep himself in work. Idle hands, and all that.
Adam Driver is also on board, as is Jason Momoa. We don’t yet know who they will play but we do get Jeff Bridges as God, although Gilliam has previously confirmed that he’s going to use some animation to help transform Bridges in some way. Emma Laird has joined the cast – she will probably be playing Eve – while Asa Butterfield will portray Adam.
Terry Gilliam spoke about the film’s plot in 2023, and it sounds fascinating. In his own words, “God has decided to wipe out humanity, which he does … The person who tries to stop it is Satan. Because Satan needs humanity, because his job is to tempt and seduce him. He’s the one who tries to convince God: OK wipe them out, but let me provide a new Adam and Eve to start again, and maybe this time it will work better…”
We don’t know when to expect Carnival, but if this report is accurate then we should have further news by the end of the year. More, as always, as we hear it.
