Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour director Sam Wrench is stepping into the hot seat for the remake of 1992ās The Bodyguard.
When a remake of The Bodyguard was first announced in 2021, it made a lot of sense. Having first been conceived in the 1970s as a vehicle for Diana Ross and Steve McQueen, it eventually become a hugely popular collaboration for Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.
Much like A Star Is Born ā which now boasts four distinct films ā The Bodyguard is surely a film that Warner Bros can return to every 30 years and remake with a hot acting talent and a musical superstar.
Itās taken a few years for the project to gain some traction, but things seem to be moving along now (thanks, The Hollywood Reporter) with the news that Sam Wrench will be stepping into the directorās chair.
Wrench is the director of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, the incredibly successful concert film that grossed over $260m at the box office in late 2023. While he boasts an impressive filmography of tour films and music videos, the filmmaker doesnāt have anything in the realm of narrative drama on his CV yet, so this feels like a bold pick from the studio.

But who will star? Wrenchās professional relationship with Taylor Swift will have many speculating that she could play the role occupied by Houston in the 1992 film. Sheās certainly a big enough star, and Swift has dipped her toes into the world of film before. She made a brief appearance in David O Russellās Amsterdam and is said to be working on a film project of her own. She was also part of the legendary Cats ensemble, too.
Taylor Swiftās involvement is pure speculation at this point, though. What we do know is that the script has been written by Jonathan Abrams, who wrote last year’s Clint Eastwood-directed Juror #2 for the studio.
This project has been in the works at the studio since 2011, so hopefully now, with a green light, a script and a director, a couple of major casting announcements wonāt be too far behind.
