The Conjuring: Last Rites won’t go down as the last film in the franchise as Warner announces a new prequel to Ed and Lorraine Warren’s adventures.
Despite The Conjuring: Last Rites being the weakest instalment in the horror movie franchise originated by James Wan, the film brought in quite a few bums on seats, earning almost $500m globally.
Although the film was advertised as the closing chapter in the franchise, Warner Bros has now announced that another movie, a prequel, is now in the works. It’s not exactly a surprise with The Last Rites proving that there is still some money to be made from these films, but the fourth outing does lose some of its power now we know it’s not the end of the franchise.
As reported by Variety, Rodrigue Huart, mostly known for his short films, is set to direct the new movie with the script being written by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg. Naing and Goldberg wrote the last two The Conjurings as well as The Nun II, so they’re already very familiar with the franchise and its lore.
Naturally, ghost bothering duo Ed and Lorraine Warren will return. Although no casting announcement has been made, it’s likely that Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga won’t be returning if the prequel focuses on the early years of the demon hunting couple. That being said, never say never.

Even if Wilson and Farmiga won’t be signing on to the prequel, there is also the case of The Conjuring TV show currently in development. Nancy Won has been tagged as the series’ showrunner, primary writer and executive producer with Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires also writing. We know DC Studios boss Peter Safran is also on board and James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster is also involved but story details are still under wraps.
Although this writer is a big fan of The Conjuring films, it’s a shame to see Hollywood being unable to let something rest in peace. Nothing is ever permanent or finished for good, especially when it comes to horror franchises. Did we learn nothing from Halloween or A Nightmare On Elm Street?
