Here’s a small, historic Hollywood acquisition that’s taken place, in the shadow of other bigger deals circling. The Jim Henson Studio lot in Los Angeles has been sold, with music star John Mayer and director McG the new owners of the facility.
As per a Deadline report, they’ve taken the keys to the studio, where they’re set to ensure that work continues. They’ve also renamed it to Chaplin Studios.
The Chaplin name is no coincidence, given it’s the studio – in a previous guise – where Charlie Chaplin shot films such as The Kid and The Great Dictator. On the music side, it’s also the place where the US charity single We Are The World was recorded.
As for the facility itself, it’s been owned Jim Henson’s family since they bought it in 2000, but the Hensons had announced they were seeking a buyer. The Hensons have a separate, ongoing plan to house The Jim Henson Company at the same location as Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, although hasn’t yet secured whatever that location is going to be.
The sale of the lot had apparently caused a bit of a kerfuffle in the Los Angeles area, when it was reported that the Church Of Scientology was interested in buying it. This led to the Henson family issuing a firm denial, stating that “the Henson family is not in any business dealings with the Church of Scientology, and that organization is not in consideration as a potential buyer of the property.”
Already, John Mayer has offices at Chaplin Studios, and records music there. It’s expected that McG will be setting up shop on site as well, with Chaplin Studios very much open for bookings in film, digital media, TV and folk dancing. Made one of those up.
