The Mandalorian And Grogu secured the lowest ever opening weekend for a Star Wars movie since Disney bought Lucasfilm. More on that below.
Din Djarin and Grogu didnโt quite beat young Han Soloโs low opening box office as the pair made the move from the small screen to the big screen.
The Mandalorian And Grogu, as detailed here by The Guardian, made a total of ยฃ165m at the global box office over its first weekend in cinemas, making this the lowest opening weekend for a Star Wars film since Disney has taken over the franchise. In comparison, Ron Howardโs Solo ended its first weekend with ยฃ171m under its belt back in 2018.ย
That being said, Solo did have a far more bloated budget of ยฃ275m whereas The Mandalorian And Grogu managed to keep its expenses a little lower with a somewhat reasonable ยฃ165m budget.
The low opening weekend numbers arenโt a surprise. It was predicted that The Mandalorian And Grogu would likely gain the shame of having the lowest numbers, but perhaps there is still hope. Audiences seemed to enjoy the film and its Rotten Tomatoes page currently holds a 88% audience score against a critics score of 62%.
In his review, Ryan Lambie called the The Mandalorian And Grogu โStar Wars for shareholdersโ and that with this new film, the franchise “has never felt less like one weird, socially-awkward guyโs space fantasies writ large.โ
Over on our YouTube channel, we wondered if this was it for Star Wars on the huge screen or if the franchise simply works better now on TV. We do still have high hopes for Shawn Levyโs Starfighter which is set to hit cinemas next year and will star Ryan Gosling. That film is supposed to feature new characters and head to a corner of the universe that other Star Wars projects haven’t visited yet. We’re cautiously optimistic about that one.
