Last year’s new The Naked Gun wasn’t at all to the liking of original director David Zucker, but still found a modest audience, and the response to it was pretty decent. Personally, I had a good time with it, and out of the four Naked Gun movies to date, would probably place it second of the lot. Other opinions are very much available and have been stated.
Liam Neeson has suggested around the time of the film’s release that his turn as Lt Frank Drebin Jr was a one-movie gig, but I’m sure he said things akin to that around the time of the Taken sequels too. For director Akiva Schaffer though, he’s not closed the door on The Naked Gun 2, but doesn’t seem optimistic. And Paramount’s sale to Skydance might have something to do with it.
“We are not planning another,” Schaffer told CBR at the Critics Choice Awards, when asked about a follow-up. “I don’t know if you heard about Paramount kind of changed owners … it was about seven days after the movie came out, and so you know we’re waiting to hear to see if they would want it.”
Now the tone of that answer is a tiny bit different from the absolute shut out of before, and it sounds as though an enquiry has at least gone in about a fresh Naked Gun. Dan Gregor, Doug Mand and Schaffer wrote the recent film, and Schaffer admits the trio have a bunch of gags they’d want to use. Producer Erica Huggins added too that “we have a big idea that we had talked about.”
But does a modestly-costed comedy that’d build its audience over a period of time appeal to the new regime at Paramount? That much is unclear, although a lurch towards reigniting its bigger franchises does offer a clue.
