Robert Rodriguez is returning to the world of family movies with The Naughty List, an animated Christmas movie.

Robert Rodriguez is a rare filmmaker whose filmography is full of superbly violent films like Planet Terror and From Dusk Till Dawn, but he has perhaps found even greater success with a younger demographic with the Spy Kids franchise and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.

Rodriguez is now turning to animation for the first time for his next feature. Variety reports that Rodriguez is working on The Naughty List, an animated Christmas movie inspired by drawings and stories the filmmaker has been making with and for his kids. No plot details are available yet.

Rodriguez will write, direct and produce the film and Variety’s sources from Paramount also reveal that the film will also have a modern, next-generation approach alongside the Christmas themes.

Rodriguez confirmed the news on his Twitter

“Exciting news! …and a little trivia: way back in the day I was a cartoonist before I became a filmmaker. So I’m SUPER PUMPED to share that I’m returning to one of my first loves, drawing and animation, by directing my first ANIMATED feature with Paramount Animation! It’s an original idea I’ve been drawing and developing over many years – a funny, irreverent, and surprising Christmas tale for the whole family called The Naughty List.  It’s one of my favorite stories, and I can’t wait to share more with you!,” the director wrote.

Rodriguez is particularly known for his excellent action scenes, so it’ll be intriguing to see if The Naughty List will include some of those and how Rodriguez’s skills translate to animation. After all, the director gave us one of the weirdest heist scenes of 2023.

The director’s filmography is also filled with particularly stylish films. From Dusk Till Dawn is a certified classic of its genre, Sin City brought Frank Miller’s comic books to the screen with unique visuals and while most didn’t respond to the wackiness of Planet Terror, you can’t deny how good that film looked.

There’s no confirmation when we might see The Naughty List, but we’re certainly interested to see what the first Robert Rodriguez animation will look like!
