A new trailer gives us our best look yet at Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and a cute puppy.

Update: Another trailer for The Odyssey has appeared, giving us our best look yet at director Christopher Nolan’s take on the epic Greek tale. (No, it isn’t an adaptation of 1980s animated classic, Ulysses 31. More’s the pity.)

Will audiences flock to see Odysseus travel around in boats and flee in terror from a colossal cyclops? Following the surprise $1bn success of Oppenheimer, Universal has given Nolan a reported $250m to realise his mythical vision on a grand scale.

And with some grand names: the dominant state of the Hollywood superhero industrial complex means that, if you’re particularly bad at suspending your disbelief, the new trailer for The Odyssey sees Batman call Spider-Man a snivelling bastard. Oh, and Jason Bourne’s married to Catwoman. There’s also an adorable puppy to give Nolan’s Odyssey a bit of added ‘aww’ factor.

The Odyssey is in UK cinemas from the 17th July 2026.

Our earlier story follows….

Update 22nd December 25: After a few weeks doing the rounds in your local cinema, Universal has unleashed the first full trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey on an expectant internet.

Starring Matt Damon as Mr. Odysseus himself, alongside an army of undead warriors, a cyclops-shaped shadow and plenty of anachronistic helmet choices, it’s clear the director isn’t shying away from the fantastical elements in Homer’s epic.

Apparently in an effort to get people to watch the trailer in a cinema anyway, the on-black typeface is a deceptively difficult-to-read navy blue. Will the whole film be just as inscrutable on home screens? That’s one way to sell a ticket if so…

Check out the new trailer below:

The original story (10/12/25) follows:

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, out next year, brings with it a tangible sense of bigness. It’s an adaptation of a piece of epic Greek poetry. Its cast is full of big names. It’s been shot with big IMAX cameras on a big budget of a reported $250m.

Fittingly, there’s a big trailer coming up for Nolan’s big film. 70mm IMAX screenings of James Cameron’s similarly grand Avatar: Fire And Ash will be preceded by a six-minute ‘prologue’ trailer according to Deadline; the same promo will also appear in front of 70mm IMAX screenings of Sinners and One Battle After Another from the 12th December onwards.

There’ll also be a new, regular-length trailer for The Odyssey attached to all those non-IMAX screenings of Fire And Ash, so even those of us who aren’t able to see Cameron’s Avatar sequel on film will still get a new glimpse of Nolan’s much-hyped next movie.

The Odyssey isn’t the only eagerly-anticipated film with a trailer attached to Fire And Ash, either. Just over a week ago came news that Steven Spielberg’s mystery movie – so secret that it doesn’t even have a confirmed title – will also have its debut trailer ahead of the third Avatar.

Avatar: Fire And Ash releases in UK cinemas on the 19th December, which means we should have a better idea of what Spielberg’s been up to – and why he’s been so secretive – in just over a week.

Two of the movies listed here are all big creative swings from some of Hollywood’s most respected directors. Following the surprisingly huge success of Oppenheimer, The Odyssey is Nolan’s take on the historical epic, with its cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and more besides. Will audiences turn up in huge numbers for a dark-seeming rendition of Homer’s Odyssey? They certainly came out in support of a low-key drama about a scientist building the first atom bomb.

Avatar: Fire And Ash may be a sequel, but it has its own risk attached: the previous films made profits in the billions, but have audiences begun to tire of James Cameron’s sci-fi fantasy universe? This latest Avatar has a reported budget of $400m, and even Cameron admits that his film has to make a lot of money just to make even.

The Odyssey is due for release in UK cinemas on the 17th July 2026.
