Kurt Russell has joined Matthew McConaughey in The Rivals Of Amziah King, an upcoming thriller from the director of sci-fi gem The Vast Of The Night.

The Vast Of The Night, a low-budget sci-fi film released in 2019, is excellent and you should watch it if you haven’t already. In directly related news, the filmmaker behind it, Andrew Patterson, has been busy making his follow-up: a crime thriller called The Rivals Of Amziah King.

Filming has already been completed, but it’s only now being revealed that Patterson has managed to corral an impressive supporting cast for the production. Matthew McConaughey stars, and per Deadline, is flanked by Kurt Russell, Cole Sprouse, Owen Teague, Rob Morgan, Jake Horowitz and Angelina LookingGlass.

Little is known about the plot, though a press release from Black Bear, its financing company, says that it’s a “deeply atmospheric, character-focused crime thriller set against the unique backdrop of remote Oklahoma.”

Andrew Patterson made his feature debut with the aforementioned The Vast Of The Night, which he directed and also co-wrote and co-produced under a pseudonym. Set at the height of the flying saucer flap in the 1950s, it’s about a teenage DJ (Jake Horowitz) and a switchboard operator (Sierra McCormick) who encounter something uncanny one hot summer night.

Patterson shot the film for just $700,000, and it’s an atmospheric, technically superb debut. It picked up several awards at festivals and a clutch of glowing reviews, so it’s perhaps unsurprising that Patterson’s second film – which he’s also writing and co-producing – has attracted such a starry cast.

A release date hasn’t been announced for The Rivals Of Amziah King yet, but given production has finished, it shouldn’t be too far away. More on this as we get it.
