Shine On: The Forgotten Shining Location explores an area of The Shining that hasnāt been covered before, hereās the trailer.
This month, we lost Shelly Duvall. Among her myriad acting roles, not least one of the most perfect pieces of accurate comic book casting ever as Olive Oyl in Robert Altmanās Popeye, she is perhaps best remembered for her incredible performance opposite Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrickās The Shining. The tales of tyranny from the set are legendary, with stories of endless takes and Duvall suffering from nervous exhaustion.
Shine On: The Forgotten Shining Location examines an area of the film not previously covered in documentaries like Rodney Ascherās 2012 film Room 237.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Almost 50 years after its release, all the Overlook Hotelās sets are thought to have been destroyed, but one last filming site remains. āThere have been so many rumors about some of the sets from The Shining still existing at Elstree Studios, but to actually find them and walk around them was like discovering a holy grail of film history.ā
Scenes shot on the set they refer to include many of the interiors, including those set in the kitchen. The film was directed by Paul King ā a different Paul King to the one who directed the Paddington films.
It features interviews with executive producer Jan Harlan, art director Les Tomkins and Kubrickās daughter Katharina, who worked on location scouting.
Just as a footnote, and something that should be mentioned on every article ever written about The Shining, if you havenāt seen The Simpsons' parody version, The Shinning from 1994ās Halloween episode Treehouse of Horror V, it is often cited as one of the best ever film parodies and is well worth watching.
Shine On: The Forgotten Shining Location will be released for free on YouTube On the 26th July, also known as Stanley Kubrick Day. You can watch it on Stanley Kubrickās official YouTube channel.
