Watch MonstroElisaSue wreak havoc in glorious 4K as Coralie Fargeat’s award-winning The Substance heads to physical media.
We’re less than a week away from the Oscars at the time of writing, which means we’re less than a week away from finding out whether Demi Moore will bag her first golden statue for her role in Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance. The film, which was released in September, has been an unlikely success for MUBI; a rare body horror that has found mainstream success.
If you’re keen to have The Substance as part of your physical media collection, then the opportunity will arise soon. The Substance will be available on 4K UltraHD Blu-ray, regular Blu-ray and DVD from the 31st March.
You can pre-order those on Amazon.
In our review, we called The Substance “a constant negotiation between elegance and gore, beauty and horror.” We also found Moore’s performance to be “a towering, fearless” one.

The film was originally set up at Universal, but the studio wasnāt too keen on Fargeat’s final cut. Universal wanted Fargeat to make several changes, including to the film’s ending, but Fargeat stood firm, prompting Universal to sell the film to MUBI. Itās fair to say they may now regret that decision.
Fargeat also revealed that she turned down the opportunity to direct Marvel’s Black Widow in order to make The Substance, which is nominated for five Oscars this year.
We’ll leave you with the official synopsis:
Demi Moore gives a career-best performance as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and suddenly fired from her fitness TV show by repellent studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid). She is then drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug: The Substance. All it takes is one injection and she is reborn ā temporarily ā as the gorgeous, twenty-something Sue (Margaret Qualley). The only rule? Time needs to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. A perfect balance. What could go wrong? Deliriously entertaining and ruthlessly satirical, Coralie Fargeatās Cannes sensation turns toxic beauty culture inside out with a be-careful-what-you-wish-for fable for the ages. Explosive, provocative and twisted, The Substance marks the arrival of a thrillingly visionary filmmaker.
