Future Publishing has announced that Total Film magazine is going to close with its upcoming issue 356. Rubbish, rubbish news.
Ah, this is absolutely terrible news. After 27 years, it’s been announced that the upcoming issue of Total Film magazine will be its last. Future Publishing, the publishers of the magazine for every one of its 356 issues, has announced that the new issue – that goes on sale from 10th October – will be the last.
I’ve a personal attachment to Total Film, given that I’ve bought every issue since the start, and that for a while, they gave a nervous young writer a spot in their magazine. But it’s also been a showcase for the work of many brilliant writers, designers, sub-editors and skilful people behind the scenes.
To the Total Film team, we send our very best, and we hope that you land on your feet soon. Your work flying the flag for print film media has not gone unnoticed.
For the broader world of print magazines, it’s a difficult and chastening day, not least in the week that we also lost the terrific Home Cinema Choice magazine.
Appreciating we’re all supposed to be bitter rivals, fighting in car parks with massive tridents, I buy every other film magazine and gleefully support them all. Print media, film print media, has been a huge part of my life, and I’ve been a long-time Total Film fan. I’m gutted it’s going for its staff, but I’m also gutted as a reader.
It seems right and fair that this story is built from Total Film’s own words, with a clickback to its own post. I’ll be among the many in the queue to get hold of the final issue of the magazine, and I’ll be among the many reading it with a heavy heart.
The very best to the Total Film team, and what a rubbish news story to write.
āGladiator II is on the cover of Total Film’s upcoming issue 356, which hits print and digital newsstands on October 10. It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that this will be the final issue of the print magazine.

We like to think that this final print edition is a showcase… pic.twitter.com/CJs5f017j6
