What do Hearthstone, Kerbal Space Program, Alto’s Adventure and Outer Wilds all have in common? Why, they were all built in Unity, of course. It’s the engine that powers hundreds of games large and small – even, we’ve just discovered after a bit of googling, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX on the Nintendo Switch.
If you’ve been meaning to start learning how to make games in Unity, but like learning the banjo or taking up an obscure martial art, you’ve never quite got round to it, then now’s a good time. Due to the unfolding coronovirus pandemic, Unity has kindly opened up its Unity Learn Premium program – a series of online tutorials that you’d normally have to pay to acccess.
It’s all right there when you visit the learn.unity site: “To help support you during these times,” an announcement reads, “we’re committed to providing all users with three months of complimentary access to Unity Learn Premium.”
Downloading the Unity engine is free itself; you’ll just need to make an account to get the software, which will then give you access to Unity Learn’s suite of tutorials and live courses.
Given that so many of us are in self isolation for at least the next few weeks, actually learning how to make games – whether it’s a 2D platformer or a 3D dungeon crawler – is a pretty constructive way of using our spare time, I’m sure you’ll agree.
The Unity Learn Premium lasts until 20 June. And if you’re looking for more informative Unity content, why not check out Wireframe’s bookazine, Build Your Own First-Person Shooter In Unity? You can buy a copy at our store or download it as a free PDF.
